We are one of the few tent repair companies in the UK and Ireland who are experts in the repair of lightweight specialist tents.
The vast majority of lightweight (backpacking) tents are manufactured in the Far East and they are imported into this country by distributors. If anything goes wrong with the tent within the warranty period the tent is often replaced. If anything happens to the tent outwith the warranty period (or if the warranty does not cover the damage) then we can offer to repair the item.
The most common repairs we undertake are to the zips, poles, replacing groundsheets and patching holes and tears. We always take into account the value of the tent and the cost of the repair and we may advise that a tent is uneconomic to repair. Budget tents made in the Far East suffer zip failures fairly frequently because the metal used in the zip slider is relatively soft and wears and distorts very easily - all we do in this case is to cost-effectively replace the slider! More specialised tents suffer a similar problem after extensive use in extreme conditions where sand and dirt wear down the metal zip sliders. On higher quality tents as the nylon teeth of the zips usually remain sound, again only the sliders need to be replaced and the nylon teeth of the zip cleaned with a silicone spray.
A major problem with budget nylon tents and elderly well used backpacking tents (originally made in the UK such as Ultimate, Phoenix and Vango Force Ten Nylon tents) is ultraviolet deterioration. Over the past 10 years this has become more serious as the 'hole' in the Ozone layer has increased the effect of UV light on nylon fabrics. Please note that some colours absorb more UV light than others. When you contact us with a flysheet that has a tear we may ask you to twist the fabric in the damaged area to see if it tears easily. If it does then the fabric is likely to be too tender to take a stitched repair. We never carry out a repair unless we feel it is economically worth it.
